Tottenham Hotspur New Stadium Development

The construction of Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium has delivered one of the finest sporting and entertainment venues in the world

In the development of Tottenham Hotspur's new stadium, Mace Construction have helped to create a major sports and entertainment landmark for visitors, the wider community, London and the UK. With a seating capacity of nearly 63,000, the atmospheric bowl ensures spectators are closer to the pitch than at any other comparable ground in the UK, with uninterrupted views for everyone at any event. The stadium has been designed for atmosphere, including the incorporation of the UK’s largest single tier stand, the home southern end, which will hold up to 17,500 fans.

The venue doesn't just cater for football as Tottenham Hotspur has agreed a long-term partnership with the National Football League (NFL) that will see a minimum of two American football games played at the stadium each season for 10 years. This has been made possible thanks to a retractable grass field for Tottenham Hotspur home fixtures with an artificial surface underneath that will be multi-use and capable of hosting NFL matches, concerts and other high-profile events.

The unique 'Sky Walk' allows people to climb the exterior of the building and first-class conference and banqueting facilities allow the stadium to be active 365 days a year. The curved roof melds together with the stadium structure and the newly covered service area was designed to reduce noise and disruption for local residents. The development is also home to, what is believed to be, the longest general admission bar in a UK stadium at nearly 87 metres. The new stadium, visitor attractions, homes and other uses proposed for the site will support a total of 2,500 jobs in the locality – a net 1,700 directly employed at the site with a further 800 supported through the supply chain and other direct spending.

In addition, the increased numbers of supporters and visitors to Tottenham will supply a further 980 jobs locally. In addition the development will support around 3,500 jobs with £293m pumped into the local economy each year. That is an increase of 1,700 new jobs and £166m local spending a year – an enormous impact for an area in real need of new jobs and more economic activity. Before a brick was laid and the stadium was simply a hole in the ground, the project team at Mace contacted me to select heating boilers for this project.

The brief was that they should be very high in efficiency, ultra-low in NOx emissions, compact and light weight as they were to be installed in pairs on a prefabricated skid with all pipework, valves and pumps installed. Ten boilers were required in all and the Elco Trigon XL500 stainless steel condensing boiler was selected to meet the load requirements of the building.

The M&E works for the project was provided by Price Building Services of Croydon at a cost of £19.5m. The design, supply and installation of the prefabricated skids by Price saw considerable on-site reduced contributing to the stadium being able to open the doors to host it’s first match against Crystal Palace on April 3rd 2019.The celebratory 2.0 win for Tottenham no doubt meant that the staff, at that very long bar, were put to the ultimate test!
